A civic landscape shaped by the lava fields of Hualālai

Keahuolū Courthouse

Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi Island · 10 acres · State / Civic · Built 2019

With AHL as Prime Consultant, Studio Kīpuka designed the landscape for Keahuolū Courthouse, the Hawaiʻi State Judiciary's centralized courthouse for West Hawaiʻi. The site sits in the transition zone between the Kona coast and the flank of Hualālai, where mauka-makai trails once crossed aging lava flows and sparse dryland scrub. The design draws directly from that landscape: a water-efficient xeriscape built from basalt rock and gravel harvested on site during grading, basalt seat walls at the drop-off that double as force protection, and street frontages patterned with Hawaiian motifs in basalt relief. A contemplative path from Makala Boulevard to the public lobby recalls Kānāwai Māmalahoe, the Law of the Splintered Paddle, and its promise of safe passage for all. Clear pedestrian routes, raised crossings, and shaded courtyards organize a site dominated by parking into a civic landscape that stays legible, secure, and lower maintenance in Kona's dry climate.
